"You missed us you cunts" - The story of two 19 year Aussies fighting on the front line of Ukraine

A day before the assault began the russians crawled up into our trench in the heavy fog. It was the most eery feeling knowing that your drones can’t see anything and neither can you. The morning of the assault they used motorbikes to drop men back and forth and flank around our positions to attempt to cut of flanks and reinforcements. Communication within the assault was by the very least chaotic, the first time when we knew Russians where in our trench is when we heard them yelling and directing orders in Russian. The scary things wasn’t the bullets or fighting the foot soldiers. But the almost constant artillery, fpvs, mavics, and all sorts of strange russian weaponary. Most of the Russians where halted by the morning, 12-15 marines attempted to push in waves through the fields next to us, but where worked on one by one by drones. The guys in front of us got as close as 5-10m but didn’t make it past us until the order to fall back. During the fighting an American Nick Duckworth ‘duck’ volunteered to come as a reinforcement, he gave medical attention to multiple Ukrainians, towards the end of the morning we were being hit with everything. Nick trusted me with his rifle and took my original spot to reload rifles. During incoming and an fpv made its way into our trench and with split second thinking Nick moved in front of it as he saw it heading right between me and my mate. Nick sacrificed himself for me and my mate. He’s a real hero.
I don’t think I’ll ever look at fog the same again.
I met my mate ‘fives’ through the legion, during February earlier in the year by sheer luck. He was the same age as me and lived in the same hometown back home. Yet I never met him until that day in the legion. We have been together ever since, if it wasn’t for him I would be twice as scared. We’ve trained in numerous amount of units with different specialities. To this date we’ve been on zero line for about 3 months, and in Ukraine for about 9 months.
