Going Dark: Ukraine Stops Counting Missiles and Bets on a Drone Wall

The morning briefing got shorter this week, and the silence is the story. Since August 9, Ukraine's Air Force has stopped publishing the two numbers this channel and every OSINT desk in the world checked first each morning: how many ballistic missiles Russia fired overnight, and how many were intercepted. Drone figures still come out, 98 of 120 downed on the night of August 11 by the official count. The missile line is just gone. On August 13, spokesperson Yurii Ihnat confirmed the change is policy, not an oversight. A week after the night Kyiv went zero for twenty-eight, the scoreboard has been switched off.


The Number That Disappeared

The timeline is tight and it tells you why. On August 5, Russia put 28 ballistic missiles into Ukrainian skies in a single night and, by Kyiv's own admission, none were intercepted. We covered that night as the moment the air defense math broke. Four days later, on August 9, the ballistic launch and intercept figures quietly vanished from the Air Force's morning summaries. By August 11, when more than a dozen ballistic missiles hit Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kyiv, the official readout listed drone interceptions and nothing else.

Bloomberg, citing a person familiar with the decision, reported the format change was made as a security measure in response to Russia's attacks. Ihnat's public framing, relayed by Meduza and Ukrainian outlets, is that the Air Force will keep warning residents about air threats and the nature of each attack, while aggregated missile data will be released to media periodically instead of daily. He has also previously asked editors to avoid headlines emphasizing missiles that got through, arguing they demoralize the public.

Both explanations can be true at once. Daily intercept tallies are battle damage assessment handed to Moscow for free: they tell Russian planners which salvo packages saturated the defense and which were wasted. They are also, when the number starts with zero, a blow to home-front morale and a running argument for Ukraine's partners about where interceptors are going. Going dark buys operational security and political breathing room at the same price: the public record this war has been unusually rich in just got poorer.


The Math They Stopped Publishing

The last month of open data explains the decision better than any statement. In July, by figures reported before the blackout, Ukraine intercepted 29 of 195 Russian ballistic missiles, a rate around 15 percent. Another 40 reportedly failed on their own before reaching targets. Interceptor deliveries in the first half of 2026 ran roughly three times lower than the same period in 2025, a shortfall President Zelensky has complained about publicly, and July set a 2026 record with 351 missiles of all types launched.

The trajectory is worse than the snapshot. Maj. Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, has warned that Russia can currently put around 77 ballistic missiles into the air simultaneously and is working toward 200. His arithmetic was blunt: even if they only manage half of that, it will all be flying at us. Against that curve, with Patriot-class interceptors arriving at a third of last year's rate, publishing a daily box score was advertising a widening gap every single morning.


The Drone Wall Rises

The same 48 hours that confirmed the blackout also showed the shape of Ukraine's answer, and it is not more imported missiles. It is interceptors it can build itself. On August 12, the Defense Ministry codified the TAF Kolibri-i10, a purpose-built interceptor drone from TAF Industries that grew out of the combat-proven Kolibri 10 FPV. The i10 flies at over 200 kilometers per hour, out to 25 kilometers, up to 3,000 meters, with day and night cameras, and is aimed squarely at the Molniya, Orlan, and Zala reconnaissance and strike drones that cue Russian fires.

The same day, Ukrainska Bavovna unveiled the Last Shadow T200, a heavier interceptor for the Shahed and Geran class. The claimed numbers are serious: 300 kilometers per hour, a 5 kilometer ceiling, one hour of endurance, and a combat-demonstrated 122 kilometers of range on a stable video link. Most interesting to us is the counter-countermeasure: a video channel and frequency-switching system built specifically to defeat Shtora, the Russian video-spoofing kit that has been blinding interceptor operators. The airframe is 3D printed today and moves to cast construction within months. This is an ecosystem iterating on Russian jamming in real time, at FPV prices, while Defence Intelligence estimates Russia is producing around 2,800 Geran-2 airframes a month with thousands more stockpiled. A $19 Million Endorsement

Confirmation that the approach works came from an unlikely auditor: the Pentagon. On August 11, the U.S. Marine Corps awarded Vertex a contract worth about $19 million for 10 Tempest counter-drone vehicles, a Hellfire-armed buggy-mounted system with its own radar. The type is already operating in Ukraine, which is precisely the point. Combat validation in Ukrainian hands is now the fastest route into Western procurement, and the traffic is starting to flow both ways: Ukraine exports proof, and imports scale.


Why It Matters

For two years the nightly intercept feed was the most reliable public sensor on the missile war. Analysts used it to track Russian production, salvo doctrine, and Ukrainian magazine depth. That sensor is now off, and every OSINT estimate of the ballistic exchange gets wider error bars from here. The blackout also marks a doctrinal admission: Ukraine cannot buy its way out of the ballistic problem with scarce Western interceptors, so it is splitting the threat. Drones, 90 percent of the incoming mass, go to a homegrown interceptor wall priced in thousands of dollars. Ballistics get point defense around what matters most, and silence around everything else.


What to Watch

Watch whether the promised aggregated missile data actually appears, and at what cadence. Watch for Kolibri-i10 and T200 kill claims migrating from launch announcements into unit footage. Watch September's Zapad-linked window for Brovdi's salvo curve, any night with 100-plus ballistic launches means the 200 goal is closing. And watch for the next Ukrainian-proven system to show up in a Pentagon contract line, because Tempest will not be the last.
